Kottayam is known as Akshara Nagari / Chuvarchitra Nagari / Land of 3L’s (Lake, Letter, Latex). Kerala leading newspaper Malayala Manorama, Mangalam, Deepika were started in Kottayam and also headquarters is in Kottayam. Nair Service Society headquarters at Changanashery, Kottayam. The renaissance leaders like Mannathu Padmanabhavan and Kuriakose Elias Chavara started educational institutions like colleges and schools etc in Kottayam. Kottayam is derived from word kotta which means fort and akam which means inside. Various political agitation held in Kottayam like Vaikam Sathyagraha and Malayali memorial.
